Back in March, we discussed our tailored technology approach to meeting increasingly stringent emissions regulations and customer needs. With the recent introduction of the PowerTech PWL 4.5L Final Tier 4/Stage IV engine at Bauma 2013, let’s take a renewed look at this approach.
You’ll recall that since emissions regulations began in the 1990s, John Deere has been dedicated to adopting emissions-reduction technologies to meet regulations and application needs. This systematic “building block” approach has resulted in our Integrated Emissions Control system — a technology solution that optimizes engine performance, operating efficiency and long-term durability.
It’s important to understand that the aim of each of the John Deere Integrated Emissions Control system configurations is to provide the best performance and lowest operating costs in each power category. The PowerTech PWL 4.5L solution consisting of a DOC and SCR is one of three Integrated Emissions Control system combinations we will offer for Final Tier 4/Stage IV:
- For engines below 36 to 55 kW (48 to 74 hp), we will provide a solution using an exhaust filter containing a DOC/DPF, without cooled EGR or SCR.
- The PowerTech PWL 4.5L engine will be equipped with SCR, a DOC and cooled EGR to meet customer needs in the 56 to 104 kW (75 to 140 hp) power range.
- Our engines 93 kW (125 hp) and above will offer a configuration consisting of cooled EGR, a DOC/DPF and SCR.
We are confident that the DOC and SCR technology solution for the PowerTech PWL 4.5L engine strikes the right balance between packaging and product cost considerations with performance and operating cost. The DPF is being used in other power categories to provide optimized performance and total fluid economy. For instance, the Integrated Emissions Control system configuration with SCR will meet emissions regulations while using low levels of diesel emissions fluid (DEF) — 1 to 4 percent of diesel fuel consumption depending on the application.
With our building block approach we have adopted the best available technologies at the right time to meet Final Tier 4/Stage IV regulations and customer needs in each power category.
